This fall, the birds are counting on Long Island

More than 70% of Long Island’s native ecosystems have been degraded by development, fragmentation, and invasive species. The result is a landscape that is harder for wildlife to survive—and harder for people to thrive. Hotter neighborhoods. Declining pollinators. Worsening flooding. Poorer air and water quality. Every season we wait, restoration becomes more difficult and more expensive.

But there is still time to change the story.

A new model for conservation

The Long Island Conservation Alliance is building a connected ecological network across one of the most densely populated islands in the world. We protect the small and midsize parcels that stitch our landscapes together—places often overlooked, but that are essential for migratory birds, pollinators, and climate resilience.

Big preserves matter. But without the connective tissue between them, wildlife has nowhere to go. LIC is turning fragmented land into living corridors that allow ecosystems to function again.

This is conservation at the scale Long Island needs—and at the speed this moment demands.
